Bringing the Visitors Back

One of the most important factors to web site success is repeat customers. Whether your site is e-commerce or informational in nature, getting people to come see it is only the first step. Getting them to KEEP coming is one of the only way to ensure success.

How do you accomplish this, though?

Trust, personal connections, and information are the keys to repeat customers. Make sure your visitors can easily contact you by PHONE or snail mail, not just email. When you do get an email from a visitor, answer it quickly and in a friendly, personal manner. Let them know that you care about their business and they are not just a "virtual customer." When an order is placed, send an email letting the customer know you have shipped their order and when to expect it. These things build trust and a personal connection with you.

You might consider letting them connect with other users through forums or message boards, but you should keep in mind that these take hours to keep cleaned off. You don't want your people seeing someone cursing or even advertising their own products!

The information part is easy. Build an article archive with information about your product or service. Encourage questions with multiple, easy to find email links. Have "Email This Page to a Friend" links to make sharing your site easy.

Better yet, start a newsletter! A newsletter allows you to contact your visitors on a regular basis. You don't have to wait for them to contact you! Include interesting articles, buying incentives and information about site updates and "goings on" in your area. Be sure there are multiple places where the customer can link back to the site.

Newsletters can be plain or fancy. Simple text in an email will work, but custom color-blocked designs with logos and pictures are much more pleasing to the eye. Whichever way you go, be sure the message is interesting and pertenent, so the reader will look forward to receiving your newsletter, rather than deleting it unread.
